While rooted in traditional classical guitar, David's performances encompass a wide range of styles and aim to broaden the scope of both classical music and classical guitar.

Traditionally, classical music has catered to specific audiences. Performance standards are extremely high, sometimes valuing technique, tradition, and execution over creativity, spontaneity, and expression. Additionally, the musicians are separate from the audience; the musicians are there to play, the audience to experience, with little or no direct interplay between the two. Classical programs (in addition to many other musical genres) tend to only feature music from the related genre, seldom if ever incorporating works from different styles (for example, a program featuring classical, bluegrass, and rap).

With David's interest in expanding these traditions, he has developed a performance style where the audience directly influences the music. Inspired by Playback Theater, people in the audience share stories, emotions, moods, or anything else they'd like to have played back to them, including musical portraits based on their personalities. David then improvises a piece of music based on what they've shared. The piece could be in any style or styles of music and on different guitars, ranging from a quiet, introspective piece on a nylon-string classical guitar to a distorted punk song on electric guitar. Whatever the piece, it is created in that moment specifically for the person who inspires it. These "soundscapes" alternate with pieces from the standard classical guitar repertoire, making the performances diverse, unpredictable, and fresh.
